Air Bagging a Bomb on a Budget - Part 1

Determine the correct position in the center of the control arm plate to attach the bottom of the airbag. Then drill a pilot hole and a 3/8-inch hole.

Cut a few inches off of the top (threaded) end of the stock shock and weld it into an 8-inch-long piece of 3/4-inch steel tube.

Use 3/4-inch steel plate to cut a 4-inch diameter mounting plate for the top of the airbag, drill two 1/2-inch holes in it and weld the tube to the mounting plate, being careful to keep the tube vertical.

Now, using 3/4-inch pipe, cut a 3-inch high "cup" and weld it to the mounting plate off-center as shown.

Here's the top mounting plate/cup and the Firestone 255C convoluted (double donut) airbag ready to be bolted together and installed.

With the bag bolted to the mounting plate/cup, slip the threaded end of the mounting rod into the stock shock hole in the tower and attach the original bushings and nut.

Lift the lower control arm up and attach the bottom of the airbag by guiding the threaded shaft through the hole in the control arm plate and attaching it with a 5/8-inch lock nut. Repeat steps on the other side and you're done.
