This challenge will be taking place between the following magazines: Eurotuner, Import Tuner, Modified, Sport Compact Car, Super Street, Turbo and, your favorite, Lowrider Magazine. The purpose of this challenge is to see who can build the best engine that can work for the magazine market. With the guidelines set, we made a game plan and partnered up with GM Performance and Ace Machine to put together one of the baddest big-block engines to be assembled for a lowrider.

Program Overview:
The Castrol Syntec Top Shop Challenge is an engine build-up competition that will involve up to seven selected Source Interlink Media titles and will include editorial coverage and online visibility. The online coverage will allow you to see the lowrider engine being built. While on the site, you will also be allowed to vote for your favorite shop and/or engine.

The Shop: Ace Machine
We’re using Ace Machine in Riverside, California. This shop should sound familiar as it’s been the backbone to performance engines in Lowrider for the past year. With that said, the partnership and chemistry between us and shop owner Jerry Stettler is ready to be taken to the next level. Jerry has been in the game for most of his life. He started wrenching at the age of 18, and after years of working for somebody else, he opened up shop and the rest has been history. Ace has 20 years of engine building experience so Jerry’s seen many engines, domestic as well as import. With experience building the
1.6-liter 4-cylinder Honda that can produce 530 horsepower and run the 1/4-mile in the low 11s, we know that Jerry’s the perfect candidate to build our lowrider engine.

The Engine: ZZ427 – All-New 427 Big-Block
There are few engines that conjure up images of greatness like the 427 Chevy big-block. New to the GM Performance Parts lineup, the ZZ427 big-block crate engine brings back all of the good things that you remember about the 427 with a few modern upgrades. With an updated cast-iron block, 9.5:1 final compression ratio, and aggressive hydraulic roller camshaft, the ZZ427 offers you outstanding performance while still living on low-octane fuel

Buildup Plans:
Plans for the GM Performance crate engine include taking it completely apart and making it even better. From internally to cosmetic, this big block will have it all. The engine is going to be candy painted in a custom fi nish. Once painted, the big-block is going to be dressed up with billet and chrome. We’re going add spark with a bigger distributor, and we will be fl owing oil through a Milodon oil pump and oil pan system. We will also be using a hydraulic cam, lifters and rocker combination
that normally helps create horsepower. The goal is to build up the engine in the way you would find it in the top lowriders in the nation. We’re going to have to produce an engine that will represent the industry to the fullest. With only a few weeks to put it together, we can’t wait to see how this engine build is going to turn out. Remember to check out the build on the Web, but most importantly, remember to vote for your favorite “lowrider”
engine.

Read More |

Maybe the closest thing that has ever been documented was the Eddie Munster bike from the '60s TV show The Munsters, a George Barris-customized Schwinn Sting-Ray. The Sting-Ray has been the bike of choice for most lowrider bike builders ever since its introduction in the '60s. The popularity of the Schwinn and similar bikes remained strong throughout the '70s. In the mid '80s, however, Sting-Rays seemed to go into hibernation as BMX and freestyle bikes seem to be the direction that all bike manufacturers and enthusiasts took.

Even though Schwinn and other manufacturers had discontinued their cantilever frames and started specializing in BMX bikes, there was still a market for the old classics. When Lowrider Magazine busted back out in 1988, people started to build cars as well as bikes. There were a few bikes still out there during this hibernation period, but they were cruisers and not show bikes. Slowly but surely, classic Sting-Rays started to become more and more popular. By the beginning of the '90s, the competition started to become intense. As a result, the old Schwinns became far more scarce as well as more expensive.

What is your opinion?

Read More |

As lowriding has taken the world by storm, it has also taken the mainstream automotive industry by surprise--no one seems to know where the world's number one auto trend came from. Some automotive enthusiasts like to write the sport off as the new cruiser on the block, eyeing hoppers and their high performance hydraulics somewhat suspiciously.

Other custom car historians dig a little deeper, tapping out a few lines about the late '70s, the television show Chico and the Man, and the first few issues of Low Rider Magazine evidence enough that lowriders have enjoyed at least a decade or two on the streets. But, lowriding's roots reach far deeper into history than that, the result of two very different traditions, California car culture and Mexican cultura coming together in Southern California. Lowriding has always had a distinct Mexican flavor, hotter than hot rods and lower than customs.

Click here to read about the history of Lowriding

Read More |

At the start, Uso--who spawned out of the Harbor area of Southern California only had a handful of members in the organization, but in just six short years the club had grown to include 22 chapters nationwide. When we first interviewed Kita Lealoa, the co-founder of the organization, for an article that appeared in the April '98 issue of LRM, he stressed that one of the biggest goals set for the club was to someday be the standard for all other clubs to follow in the future.

Click here to read entire article

Read More |

The magazine has articles on how to build a low rider car, and that would include adding hydraulics. These stories will teach you about the process, how many hydraulics might be necessary for your car, and so forth. Look at the advertisements and articles to identify shops you can go to, or at least call for advice.

STEP 2: Go to the low rider shows in your area and question the competitors at the shows. Inspect the hydraulics in their cars and see how the job was done. Don't be afraid to ask questions and get them to recommend shops.

STEP 3: Visit Internet message boards that focus on low riders. There is one at http://lowrider.com.

STEP 4: Surf the Internet for chat rooms whose main topic is low riders and/or cars.

STEP 5: Expect to pay between $2,000 and $3,000 for the work.

STEP 6: Visit the shops you have identified. Ask them how long they've been in business and how many cars they've done. If a shop does 50 cars a year, that's pretty good.

STEP 7: Watch the installer do the work. Is the work clean?

STEP 8: Ask about photo albums. Review the albums and have the sales representative tell you what the photos show.

STEP 9: Ask the sales rep and/or installer exactly what they intend to do with your car. Their explanations should be detailed. You don't want surprises.

STEP 10: Ask about warranties and guarantees. What can I say about cars? Only that everyone wants one. There are many types of cars; old cars, street racing cars, trucks, SUVs, to name a few. But around here, lowrider cars are a lot more popular than any other cars. For example if you ask most teenage guys what kind of car they want, they usually say “I want some rims, a good system (bass, CD player, Subs, etc.) and an awesome paint job.”

But cars are very expensive. They don’t come cheap, you know. That’s why the people who can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars to buy or fix up a lowrider car, buy lowrider bikes instead. But some lowrider bikes cost as much as $4,000 when they’re completely fixed up.

So why would someone want to spend that much money on a bike? Well, lowrider bikes are very in and they are still cheaper than a car. Nearly everyone who can’t afford a lowrider car wants a lowrider bike because they are fun to ride and to customize with
accessories.

Accessories play a big part of the car or bike. They add style to your bike or car. And even though bikes aren’t as big as cars, you can still add all kinds of accessories to your bike like rims, special seats, special paint jobs, custom suspension, a steering wheel and even a sound system. You can even lower or “drop” the bike.

Lowrider bikes are very different from other bikes in many ways: the shape is different, the tires are smaller, the frame has to fit the parts exactly in order for the bike to be ridable, and the handlebars are much higher than normal bikes. Lowrider bikes can also be difficult to ride, but most people catch on pretty easily.

So if you aren’t ready to lay out the cash for a lowrider car, think about getting into a bike. You can start with the basics and keep adding accessories. But if you want to pimp out your car or bike, you better start savin’!

Can’t afford a lowrider car?
Here’s what it might take to get into lowrider bike:
$ 210 Basic Bike
$ 150 Body Work
$ 500 Murals
$ 16 Tires
$ 60 Baby D Rims
$ 45 Steering Wheel
$ 250 Hydraulics

Source: Riding Low on Lowriders: Justin Quiroz Opinion

Do you agree?

Read More |
