Simply put; this pair of convertibles owned by Vernon "V-Max" Maxwell of Norco, California, is a duo not to be messed with. V-Max and his team at Ultimate Restorations retrofitted the rare Impala convertibles, and this shop continues to cement its legacy as a premier destination for those looking to bridge new school technology with classic, old school styling. The shop built the '58 and '59 to retain their elegant looks, while packing quite the punch in the form of modern LS Drivetrains. V-Max is quick to preach the virtues of going this route in a build. "I do it because I like to use my cars," laughs the veteran builder. A previous subscriber to stroked-out engines, V-Max made the switch to the LS platform because he had problems with his cars overheating during parades. The benefits of these LS engines include giving you the same, or in some cases, more horsepower while running cooler than older models and giving you more bang for your buck at the pump.

If you are into the Lowrider scene at all; you have certainly seen some of V-Max's creations and know that he is more than capable of building a show winner. These two Chevys were built as sleepers and were both completely restored and fully loaded with the era-correct options. The Impalas received cruising skirts, Continental kits, power windows, power seats, AC, power wing windows, and modern Dakota Digital gauges. The factory color palette was used to paint the vehicles, and the '58 was up first, receiving a two-stage finish in a traditional Onyx Black. With the wings on the '59 being a focal point, Max decided to two-tone it, using Inca Silver and Grecian Gray Poly. The cars received complementary interiors from Cars Inc., which were installed by Tony at Roman's, who also worked with Brad to leave room for the audio components. Max made sure that both of these frame off restorations are twins as he added the following to them: Currie Ford 9-inch rear ends with all Wilwood disc brakes, LS3s with Street and Performances' pulley system, and headers and air cleaners. They also added overdrive to the car by using the 4L60E transmissions, which work in sync with the engine. Another advantage of this engine and transmission combination is that you can control it all through the computer, giving you the shift points and the ability to control the cooling fans. The computer lets you input the height of your wheels to ensure that your speedometer works properly.

With over 300 LS transplants done by Ultimate Restorations; V-Max and Company have truly become an authority within the Lowrider scene. The shop is versatile, too, having earned a reputation for building Impalas and customs that range from Hoppers to show vehicles. When Vernon started his business, Ultimate Restorations, he decided that he would build one car for himself once a year and as you can see, he has been keeping pretty busy while enjoying the success of his venture.
