As one of the oldest established car clubs in the San Gabriel Valley area of Southern California, Together Car Club has a history of over 30 years in Lowriding. In this Lowrider Originals profile, we will be giving you a glimpse into the past and present of the club; in the form of Founding President, Danny Aguilar Sr., and current Club President, Adam Amarillas.
Danny Aguilar, Sr., a product of Los Angeles, was immersed in the Lowrider culture during his childhood years, and while other kids dreamed of toys and baseball gloves, he had his eyes fixed on the dream of owning a Boulevard cruiser. He began to carve his legacy within the culture in the 70s, when he took the streets by storm in his Lowrider; a Chevy Camaro. He represented his culture behind the wheel as well as with his car club, San Gabriel Valley’s Image Car Club. They made such an impact that Danny and a few of his fellow Car Club members were featured in the second issue of Lowrider Magazine.
Danny spent many an afternoon at a Hudson Gas Station in Pico Rivera, California, and this hub served to be a hangout for his closest friends as well. It was on one of these routine hangouts that Danny and his friends began kicking around the idea of starting their own club for a while. The crew committed to the idea, and began to set the wheels in motion, pardon the pun. One of Danny’s friends named “Gumby” thought of the name, and another friend, Ruben Mendoza, drew up the plaque design. Finally, in 1977, Together Car Club was formed with a membership of six guys and four cars. Due to their camaraderie and reverence for one another, nobody in the newly formed club wanted to assume the duties as Club President, so they looked to Danny for guidance. Having had experience in another club already, Danny stepped up and agreed to take the position. Soon after, the club’s plaques were cut and numbered, leaving Danny as the owner of the number one stamped plaque, a plaque he still has to this day.
Excited to create their legacy and make their mark on the culture, Danny and the newly formed club hit all the shows and cruise nights they could. Together Car Club also spent countless nights on the famed Whittier Boulevard, searching for recruits and taking in the sights and sounds of that exciting time in the Lowrider scene of Southern California. Danny played an integral role in the club, serving as President from the club’s infancy for a number of years before passing on his leadership torch. Throughout his tenure with the club, he helped to establish the club’s bylaws and guidelines, bringing his insight and previous club experience to the table. Danny can also take credit for adding several positive members under his leadership, too. His club is clearly a better organization thanks to his efforts, and they have recognized his impact numerous times. He has received club awards commemorating his 20, 25 and thirty years of membership in the club.
Perhaps the most important feat of Danny’s time in Together Car Club is the fact that after over 30 years, Danny is still completely active in the club. He attends every meeting and meets up with the club at car shows regularly. Even now, he’s working on restoring a 1947 Fleetline that will have the “Together” plaque stamped #1 in the back window. Like many in Lowriding, Danny plans on Lowriding until the Dmv takes away his license! Rest assured that this veteran isn’t going anywhere, and he’ll continue to proudly serve Lowriding with Together Car Club, just like he has since 1977.
