The Pachuco subculture developed in the southwestern United States in the '30s and '40s by Mexican-American youth. The subculture had a certain dress code and language that was largely misunderstood. Eventually the negative stereotype was put to rest and the Pachuco were emulated and envied by many.
After being involved in lowriding, and with different car clubs for many years, Johnny Garcia and Jamie Peralta felt it was time to start a club that was not only unique but one that would run with a certain style. They wanted to start a club that would set a standard for future generations with values. The guys got together and the plan to create a club that emulated the lifestyle of the Pachuco was set in motion by Johnny, Jamie, Johnny's brother Lupe, and Johnny's son Jay Jay. They felt that the positive image of the Pachuco was perfect for the type of club they were looking to create. The club would be a "sophisticated homeboy" club that would promote peace, unity, respect, the love of classic cars, and family values.
To avoid any negative response with the name of the club, the founders decided to name the club Pachuco Car Club. With the "s" dropped from the name, the club could emphasize on the individuality of the car and the car owner and avoid any references of being some sort of a gang. Before the club busted out onto the streets, they decided to get their rides in order and decide on a plaque design. The "El Pachuco" character from the award-winning play Zoot Suit was perfect for the club plaque. He was an individual who possessed pride and style, which fit the club's image. An antique lamppost was added to the design to finish off the image and style, and then the club was ready to unleash on the streets. The final design was laser cut not casted, and in 2002 members were rolling through the San Fernando Valley as the Pachuco Car Club.
Since then, the club has grown and continues to expand into areas outside of the San Fernando Valley, like the Antelope Valley and Orange County areas. There are over 70 active club members aging from the mid-to-late sixties down to early twenties. The club doesn't have officers, but does have a board who makes the decisions for the club. It also sticks to the trademark vintage rides from the early '30s, '40s, and '50s. Each ride is driveable and in excellent condition. The club features traditional American-made cars, as well as a few unique rides.
Tony Mercado's '36 Buick Road Master was purchased three years ago. The car had been sitting in a garage since 1972. It was originally purchased by a doctor in 1936 who had special ordered the leather interior. Tony added the skirts, gangster whites, artillery rims, pocket visor, and sounds. Finally he lowered the front and the back of the car.
Lupe Garcia's '38 Master DeLuxe was named "El Pachuco" and was originally owned by his brother Charlie. Charlie had always told Lupe he was going to restore it. Six years ago Lupe talked Charlie into selling him the car. As soon as he took the car home, Lupe restored it from the ground up, with help from Charlie and his other brother Johnny. The car has hydraulics and has been driven to every car club event in the past five years.
Bennie Najar Jr.'s '51 Buick Road Master was completely restored by himself and his son Bennie III. Bennie has owned the car for over six years, but it's only been on the road for three years.
John Sr., John Jr., and Vince Martinez restored a '41 Special DeLuxe coupe. The car was a family affair with the restoration being handled by father and sons, as well as help from their good friend Richard Cabral. The car was built as a tribute to John Sr.'s first car, which was a '41 Special DeLuxe coupe.
