Our July issue stacks the deck in the form of not one, but two pristine 1958 Impalas, courtesy of the one and only Los Angeles Car Club. These "Domin-Eights" received their shine 'n' show quality from one of the So Cal area's most reputable shops, known to most simply as "Mexico." Mexico Collision Center, as it's more properly known, is the collective business of Javier "Mexico" Gomez and family. For decades, they have made a tradition out of building outstanding lowriders and classic custom-painted cars, and it's a safe bet that well over 1,000 works of art have rolled out of the shop's driveway.

Given that steady production, it's probably also safe to say Javier has likely had to replace 100 air compressors since he opened the shop the first time, as they are seemingly never turned off! All that can be said about this man and his family, including his dad (may he rest in peace), is that they are always smiling. When you are proud of what you accomplish, why would you look any other way? Hard work brings hard earned accolades, and one double take at this double '58 cover is all the proof you'll need. For those out there looking to finish a high-caliber project, go on over to Mexico — they will steer you toward success!

Car shows are such an integral part of our culture and lifestyle, so this August issue continues our storied tradition of bringing you the best coverage possible. While we appreciate those who enjoy the shows from the pages of our magazine, attendance at the actual shows always brings photographic proof of how much support our culture truly gets. That said, check out the Tejano show that has been alive and well for over 40 years. Once you're done there, you can always swing on over to the Carnales Unidos annual Bakersfield car show at the town's fairgrounds.

The history and good times found at shows like these are a testament to how strong and diverse lowrider culture can be, and if you think it stops in the U.S., think again! We head south of the border to Tijuana, and from the looks of it, this show can hang with any show, anywhere! Speaking of car shows, Ricardo Alvarado of the Oldies car club has never missed a car show, and if you think that's an accomplishment, he would rather tell you that his club's 35th anniversary is an accomplishment far greater than that. See for yourself, as we were cordially invited to cover their special event and celebration of the club's legacy.

Play by the Rules

Once again, as a reminder of an editorial I wrote in the April Issue "Time To Play Fair," I wanted to once again alert everyone to the changes needed to be put forth in regard to some rules and format changes to this year's Las Vegas Super Show on September 21.

There have been three problems in shows past, and now there are three solutions that will benefit exhibitors from here on out. We all know that the indoor spots are always coveted, and that there are only a couple hundred available spots to choose from, so when you send in your applications EARLY this year, please remember the following:

  • If your magnificent vehicle has shown indoors for three years and there have been NO significant or major changes (i.e. complete paint/color change, complete interior color change, or total undercarriage/motor change), you cannot continue to show the same vehicle indoors.
  • All applications must be filled out neatly in full, along with two to three photos attached, regardless of the name or builders that we are presumed to know with good reputations. We simply can't go off of 900 applications scribbled and incomplete without photos, it's a nightmare in and of itself, let alone trying to justify to more worthy builders why they were denied spots to an incomplete application.
  • The last change will come by way of limiting 20x20 displays. Major cars up for competition in certain major award categories are allowed the jackstand/turntable spots, and car clubs showing in full force are allowed one 20x20 spot as well. We have to remember that space indoors is real estate and that a 20-foot space takes up an extra car space, which could have been used to allow someone outside to finally live out their dream of displaying their ride indoors.

All in all, these changes are fair and in the best interests of the Super Show going forward, as it will only help to raise the bar in terms of quality rides and quantity of attendance. We as car customizers have to become good sports within our hobby and let others have their day, too. Please remember that if there are no pictures, and if we can't read your application, then you will get a return application in the mail. If you are trying to show your vehicle for the fourth time with no changes, you will be placed outside. And lastly, 20x20 spots are under scrutiny, so please have a valid request or you will be sharing a 10x20 instead.
