We spotted this custom Impala at our San Bernardino Tour stop and it caught our attention with its custom hydro and sound system. Even though this car was designed as a show/street driver, it has a clean trunk design that can be appreciated by most car builders.
Owner Jimmy Luna had a month to build up his trunk before the San Bernardino show. He hooked up with his friend Mario to design a trunk compartment that has the best of both worlds. He started off by visiting Augie Gomez at Lugo's Hydraulics, who built up the frame and the battery racks that hold the 12 31-series batteries. Jimmy then took his car home to finish off the rest of the installation. The audio consists of an all-Scosche sound system that has the amplifiers showing while the hydraulics setup is the focus of the trunk compartment.
The hydraulics are made up of two monster aluminum blocks that were outfitted with a whammy tank, three monster green Hydro-Air dumps, two aircraft filters and three faucet slow-down valves. Once all of the gear was in, the setup was plumbed by Jimmy's two friends Leo Ramirez and Ruben Gonzales, who laid out all of the stainless steel tubing throughout the car. The batteries were painted to match the exterior of the car and highlighted by chrome that was done through V&C Polishing in North Hollywood, California.
Jimmy's '64 was a good spot at one of our shows at a time when everyone is getting ready for the summer show/cruising season. Keep up the good work.

While out in the East Coast we felt as if we were in Hawaii after seeing Keoni's '79 Monte Carlo. This tropical cruiser has a touch of Hawaii, but it definitely has a modern lowrider feel. Keoni built the trunk with an audio system that looks like an OEM piece.
The concept of this custom trunk was to have a subwoofer molded into the trunk floorboards. If a '79 Monte Carlo had a trunk with a subwoofer incorporated it would look like the audio setup in this first generation G-body. The trunk received three ShowTime hydraulic pumps that float in a custom pump rack and are powered by six painted 31-series batteries.
Everything was exposed and painted by Keoni, including the custom box built by his friend "Mopar." The enclosure holds the JL Audio 10-inch woofer that's used as fill bass for the midrange speakers. Mopar also takes the credit for building a custom wall panel and the ports that let the woofer breathe.
As we get older, we sometimes don't want a big booming sound system anymore, and that's the case with Keoni who likes to cruise with his son and didn't want anything too crazy. This basic setup gets the job done and it certainly caught our attention.
